Siemens Canada Limited Aero-Derivative Gas Turbines considers itself a world leader in aero-derivative gas turbine technology. Our research site in Montreal is a centre of excellence that uses state of the art design tools and experimental test facilities where we excel in applying gas turbine development methodologies built on best practices. The research work we do makes extensive use of computer modelling with leading edge computer codes for simulation. These include the static and dynamic behaviour of structural geometries with highly complex forms, the behaviour of very high speed rotating masses of irregular shapes, the cold to hot transient pinch point analysis of static bodies with rotating bodies, the efficiency of high velocity mass flows through varying annuli, the study of turbulent flows, and the behaviour of fluidic systems with variable interface parameters. In turn, the experimental work is supported by fit for purpose test rig equipment and test bed facilities that are continuously being upgraded to the latest available technology. These include a dynamic vibration simulation rig, an acoustic experimental test rig, a high air flow test rig, combustor atmospheric pressure, low pressure, and high pressure test rigs, an engineering laboratory for destructive and non-destructive tests, and three full scale engine test beds with the capability to accommodate gas turbine peak power. The test beds can run the gas turbine either for electrical power generation or in the mechanical drive mode. The work we do has as its primary objective the advancement of gas turbine technology for the next generation of gas turbines. The work presently being done is summarized as follows: the development of new gas turbine schemes to optimize gas turbine behaviour and achieve step change increases in power output and improvements in operational functionality and thermal efficiency; the development of new combustor technology that uses alternate and unusual types of fuels, the development of improved fuel mixing for lower levels of combustion emissions, the investigation of deterioration mechanisms and the experimentation of refurbishment processes to extend gas turbine service life, and research into the behaviour of new materials for gas turbine use to increase component life and reduce unit cost. We primarily use the industrial Trent gas turbine and the industrial RB211 gas generator as test vehicles to validate new technologies.

UrtheCast Corp.

Category: SMEs
Province: British Columbia
UrtheCast began in December 2010 as Earth Video Camera (EVC) to design, develop and deploy Earth Observation cameras on the Interantioanl Space Station. It was renamed UrtheCast Corp with when EVC completed a reverse takeover of Longford (isted in the senior board of the TSX) and the subsequent amalgamation of EVC and Longford. Subsequent to this first generation of Cameras, UrtheCast has announced a unique Constelaltion of satellite pairs. Each pair will provide coverage with multiple sensors – dual X and L band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on the lead satellite closely followed by sub-meter resolution multi-spectral optical and full motion UHD video. This constellation will deliver unprecedented data form space, combining concurrent SAR with the dyual mode optical. This data allow the development of specialized algorithms and analytics never before possible from space, for high value applications for maritime awareness, border security These applications require new techniques in image analysis, image processing, cross classification of optical, video and SAR, on board processing and cross cuing of satellites, location pointing accuracy and big data handling and processing in a cloud environment. To protect our technology and provide early revenue streams, the R&D into these areas must begin now. This R&D is augmented by our partners and early customer involvement. We will be working with our potential future custmers to their identify high applications and then use their archives and newly acquired data to compare against detailed groundtruth compiled over years at their well-documented sample sites. We plan to used multiple existing satellite sensors to provide artificial protoypes using near concurrent data acquire within 8 hours of each other to “simulate” the Constellation. With the simulated images in hand, serious work will begin on developing new information extraction algorithms based on statistical signal processing and machine learning. One focus of will be on extending and generalizing UrtheCast’s innovative “OptiSAR” algorithm, which was previously demonstrated on one test image. The extraordinary appeal of OptiSAR is that it seems to be able to extract scene information such as optical colour and vegetation indices using only the X- and L-Band radar data. This goes a long way toward making the sensor almost independent of the weather and the time of day. Research topics will include: • Construct a coherent mathematical model for the OptiSAR family of algorithms • Invent new OptiSAR variants to classify forests, agriculture, wetlands, sea ice, river ice, etc. • Interferometrically combine multipass L- and X-band radar signals to detect immanent building collapse, military threats, land instability, or environmental change. • Explore how the improved phase unwrapping of dual X- and L-band interferometry can lead to less stringent constraints on the orbits of the constellation. • Invent a generic mechanism to deploy the new algorithms onto cloud computing hosts.
